Hermès Leather Guide: Togo vs Epsom vs Clemence vs Swift
Understanding Hermès Leathers
Choosing the right Hermès leather is just as important as choosing the right style and colour. Each leather has a distinct look, feel, weight and durability profile that affects how the bag wears, ages and holds its value. This guide covers the most important Hermès leathers you'll encounter when shopping pre-owned.
Togo (Veau Crispe Togo)
The gold standard. Togo is the most popular Hermès leather for good reason:
- Texture: Medium-grain pebbled calf leather with a natural, organic look
- Feel: Soft and supple, but with enough body to hold its shape
- Scratch resistance: Excellent — the textured grain hides minor scratches beautifully
- Weight: Medium
- Best for: Birkin 25, 30, 35; Kelly Retourné; Lindy; Picotin
- Value retention: ★★★★★ — The most liquid and consistently valued Hermès leather
Togo develops a gentle, relaxed slouch over time, which many collectors love. It's the safest choice for a first Hermès purchase.
Epsom (Veau Epsom)
Structured and lightweight.
- Texture: Fine, uniform pressed grain with a slightly shiny finish
- Feel: Firmer and more structured than Togo — holds its shape well
- Scratch resistance: Good — the fine grain is fairly resilient
- Weight: Light — the lightest of the popular leathers
- Best for: Birkin 25 (very popular), Kelly Sellier, Constance, smaller bags
- Value retention: ★★★★☆ — Very strong, especially in Birkin 25 and Constance
Epsom is the best choice when you want a bag that keeps its shape and stays light. It's slightly less "luxurious" to the touch than Togo but makes up for it in practicality.
Clemence (Veau Taurillon Clemence)
Soft and relaxed.
- Texture: Similar grain to Togo but slightly larger and smoother
- Feel: Very soft and supple — the most relaxed of the popular leathers
- Scratch resistance: Good — the grain hides wear well
- Weight: Heavy — noticeably heavier than Togo or Epsom
- Best for: Lindy, Evelyne, larger Birkins (30, 35), Picotin
- Value retention: ★★★★☆ — Solid, though generally valued slightly below Togo
Clemence develops the most slouch over time. If you love a relaxed, "lived-in" look, Clemence is your leather. The weight can be a consideration for larger sizes.
Swift (Veau Swift)
Smooth and elegant.
- Texture: Very smooth, almost buttery with minimal grain
- Feel: Luxurious and refined — arguably the most "premium" feel
- Scratch resistance: Poor — Swift shows scratches, marks and colour transfer easily
- Weight: Light to medium
- Best for: Kelly Retourné, Mini Kelly, smaller bags, darker colours (less scratch visibility)
- Value retention: ★★★☆☆ — Good demand but scratch-prone nature limits value slightly
Swift is beautiful but high-maintenance. It's best in darker colours where scratches are less visible, and it's spectacular on Mini Kellys and smaller styles where the smooth surface really shines.
Evercolour (Evercolor)
The modern all-rounder.
- Texture: Fine, even grain — smoother than Togo but more textured than Swift
- Feel: Soft and pliable with a matte finish
- Scratch resistance: Moderate — better than Swift, not as good as Togo
- Best for: Lindy, Roulis, Halzan, Constance
- Value retention: ★★★★☆ — Growing in popularity, especially for Lindys
Box Calf (Veau Box)
The vintage classic.
- Texture: Ultra-smooth, polished surface with a slight sheen
- Feel: Firm, structured and refined
- Scratch resistance: Low — scratches are very visible (though many develop into desirable patina)
- Best for: Vintage Kelly Sellier (the definitive combination), Kelly Pochette
- Value retention: ★★★★★ — Vintage Box Kelly bags are highly collectible and appreciating
Box Calf is rarely used in modern production. Vintage Box Kelly bags from the 1970s–1990s are some of the most collectible Hermès bags, prized for their patina and timeless formality.
